My Longcase Construction #5 Final

Fellow clock lovers, this is my final installment on the construction of the walnut clock. I have some minor details to attend to but it is in all intents complete. I want to make a border under the arch painting and put on a signature.

One really great idea I received from Barry Share was to put on the name of the owner if it sells.

I have brought it into the house from the shop since it is getting cold. Here’s a photo of it setting in a temporary location as well as a close up of the hood and face.

I have been adjusting the pendulum to get the time correct. The only problem I had was that the pendulum I received was too long. I finally got it shortened the correct amount and now appears to be keeping correct time. The beat adjustment was also done and now seems to be fine.

The face was painted by my wife. I am very pleased with the result of her efforts. She will probably be offering her services in the future to other clock builders.

As you can see from the fret work and cross banding on the doors, I used a lot of techniques from Barry Shares E-book. In the future I will use many more since the effect is to make it simpler and the looks dramatic.

I encourage all of you that want to build a clock of your own to “Just Do It“! You will probably be pleased with the effort.

I hope you have enjoyed this small treatise on my clock construction. I have learned a lot and have ventured into new techniques that have been educational.

Good Day!

Charles Mullins

May I ask why you made the bonnet top so high behind the scrolls on the verty top ? you do beautiful work sir. Merry Christmas Bob

Hello Bob.

Your question is why I made the side of the hood so high.

Now that’s a good question. All I can say is that I saw an English clock similar to that and it just “Reached out and grabbed me”! I had that feeling that I had to build one like it someday.

It’s also somewhat unusual and I do love the unusual. If I weren’t unusual in my thinking I would probably go out and buy a clock rather than build one. But building is the fun in it all.

Thanks for the compliment.
