Longcase Construction 3

I thought I would leave a progress report since we are working hard to finish the clock.

First, I would like to show where the wife is with the clock face. We decided that we would use a simpler format on the face and use a bird, flowers and berries. It makes it colorful. She used oil so the drying is going to be slow.

We have to insert some borders and signature before clear coating to finish.

The case is stained to resemble aged walnut.  I stained it this way because there were several parts that were different colors. This technique makes it more uniform in color. I darkened the area where the fretwork goes in order for the fret work to show up. Here’s a closeup of the hood.

I used linseed oil and rubbed in pumice to act as a grain filler. When the linseed oil is dry, should be in a couple of days, I’ll seal with shellac and proceed with finishing.

I’m not sure what finish I’ll use. If anyone has any suggestions, please advise me. I am used to using lacquer sprayed but shellac is an option since it does dry fast. Here’s another photo of the complete case.

I’ll post again soon.
